Deon Thompson had his way in the post while logging 20 points and nine
rebounds in top-ranked North Carolina's 77-58 drubbing of a rebuilding
Kentucky Wildcats club in a game featuring college basketball's two winningest
programs. Wayne Ellington notched 16 points and Ed Davis added nine points and
10 boards for North Carolina (2-0), which upended a scrappy Penn squad in its
season opener on Saturday. Ty Lawson shot just 3-of-15 from the floor but
finished with nine assists and 11 points for the Tar Heels, who once again won
by double-digits despite playing without senior forward Tyler Hansbrough. He
remains out due to a stress reaction in his right shin. Patrick Patterson hit
8-of-11 from the field and notched 19 points and 11 rebounds for Kentucky
(0-2), which surprisingly dropped its season opener to VMI last Friday.

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has been named the American
League's Most Valuable Player, as voted on by the Baseball Writers'
Association of America. Pedroia, last year's AL Rookie of the Year, garnered
317 points to outdistance Minnesota's Justin Morneau by 60 points. Pedroia
placed first on 16 of the 28 ballots cast by two writers from each AL city,
second on six others, third on four, and fifth on another. The 25-year-old
Pedroia, who is the AL's first second baseman to win this award since
Chicago's Nellie Fox in 1959, batted .326 with 17 home runs, 83 RBI and 118
runs scored. He also ranked first in the AL with 54 doubles and won a Gold
Glove. Morneau picked up seven first-place votes, seven second-place tallies,
six thirds, three fourths, three fifths, a sixth, and a seventh-place vote for
a total of 257, based on a tabulation system that rewards 14 points for first
place, nine for second, eight for third on down to one for 10th. Pedroia's
teammate, Kevin Youkilis, received two first-place votes and finished
third with 201 points in the voting. Rounding out the top-five was Minnesota
catcher Joe Mauer, who received two first-place votes, and Chicago outfielder
Carlos Quentin. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim closer Francisco Rodriguez
picked up the other first-place tally and finished sixth.

The Chicago Cubs have re-signed right-hander Ryan Dempster to a four-year
deal. Although financial terms were not revealed, the contract extension is
believed to be worth $52 million. Dempster returned to the rotation on a
regular basis for the first time since 2003 this past season for the Cubs
and enjoyed a career year, going 17-6 with a 2.96 earned run average in 33
starts, while helping Chicago to its second straight NL Central title. He had
been the Cubs' closer the previous three seasons. The 31-year-old hurler
re-joins a rotation that already includes righties Carlos Zambrano and Rich
Harden, as well as lefty Ted Lilly.

New Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik has reportedly settled on a new
manager, and he has apparently raided the coaching staff of a division rival
in the process. A Seattle newspaper reported Tuesday night that Zduriencik has
picked Don Wakamatsu to be Seattle's next manager, and the announcement will
be made on Wednesday. Wakamatsu, 45, just completed his first season as bench
coach for the Oakland Athletics after spending five seasons on the coaching
staff of the Texas Rangers. Zduriencik tabbed Wakamatsu out of a group of
seven candidates, none of whom had major league managerial experience. A
former catcher, Wakamatsu's playing career spanned 12 seasons with seven
organizations. His only stint in the majors came in 1991, when he played in 18
games with the Chicago White Sox, batting .226 with no homers or runs batted
in.
=== COLLEGE FOOTBALL ===
At 10-0 Ball State is off to its best start in the 84-year history of the
program, but on Wednesday the Cardinals expect to have their hands full with a
road game against Central Michigan. The game could determine the Mid-American
Conference's Western Division title. If the Cardinals win, they'll earn at
least a share of the crown. The Chippewas, who are 8-2 this season, are also
6-0 in the MAC, just like the Cardinals.

The Bowl Championship Series is moving to cable, as ESPN has agreed to a four-
year deal to broadcast the Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowls from 2011-2014.
ESPN will also broadcast the BCS National Championship Game in 2011, 2012 and
2013. The Rose Bowl, which is televised under a separate contract with ABC, is
scheduled to host the title game in 2014 under the rotating system among the
four bowls. Under the deal, ESPN gets exclusive TV, radio, digital,
international and marketing rights for all 15 BCS games. The games will be the
first ever BCS bowls to be featured on cable. The BCS's current deal with FOX
Sports, which began in 2007, ends after the 2010 games. The bowl games had
been broadcast on ABC since the BCS's inception in 1998.

The University of Texas has agreed to a contract extension with defensive
coordinator Will Muschamp that will eventually lead to his succeeding Mack
Brown as head coach of the Longhorns, athletic director DeLoss Dodds announced
Tuesday. The only detail of the contract to be finalized is a raise of
Muschamp's salary to $900,000 on January 1, 2009. Muschamp, in his first year
with Texas, has the Longhorns ranked first in the Big 12 Conference in rushing
and scoring defense. The 37-year-old was defensive coordinator for LSU during
its national championship run in 2004. Muschamp also had a successful stint as
defensive coordinator at Auburn (2006-07) after serving as an assistant head
coach with the NFL's Miami Dolphins (2005).

Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White has reportedly been placed on
probation after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace in a March incident in
Denver. A Tennessee newspaper reported Tuesday that White will need to attend
an anger management class, though the case will be thrown out if White avoids
unlawful situations for the next year. The newspaper cited a judicial
assistant in Denver's General Sessions Court as its source, and said the
remainder of the charges against White were dismissed during his court
appearance. During a March 15 incident, according to the paper, White was
charged with destruction of property, refusal of an officer, resistance and
interference. White has rushed for 470 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Titans
(10-0) this season. |
