TOE GRABS REGULATED AT CHURCHILL
Churchill Downs Inc. has instituted a new policy that bans toe grabs longer than 2 millimeters at each of the company's four tracks. The ban, which goes into effect immediately, follows new suggested guidelines set forth by several horse racing committees, including the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. The devices have been used on tracks for decades to help horses gain traction on the dirt. They have come under fire recently after experts found accumulation of mud under toe grabs while running puts too much pressure on the bones in a horse's front legs.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM FIGHTING CANCER
Next month the Murray State volleyball team will start Swinging to Eliminate Cancer to help raise funds for the National Brain Tumor Society. Kendra Schwepker, the wife of head volleyball coach David Schwepker, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2004. The Schwepker’s received great support from the local community to help them with medical bills and with everyday chores while Kendra was first getting treatment and now they want to help others going through the same thing. All members of the 2008 volleyball team and staff are currently seeking donations for the event that will take place Nov. 14-15 at the final two home matches of the 2008 campaign. Those wishing to make donations can make a flat donation or can chose to make a donation per attack attempt recorded by both teams in both matches over the weekend. A typical match this season has resulted in around 600 attack attempts, so if a person decided to donate a penny per attempt the donation would come to $6. Donations can also be made on-line at www.firstgiving.com/MSUVolleyball. All donations are secure and will be given to the National Brain Tumor Society on behalf of the Murray State volleyball team.

KVB BELIEVES HE'LL PLAY
Slowed by a groin injury, Titans All-Pro defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch said on Titans Radio's Jeff Fisher Show he felt optimistic about playing against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday. Vanden Bosch used the Bye Week to rest and heal from the injury that caused him to leave the game in Tennessee's 13-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens...Titans rookie running back Rafael Little will have a chance to become activated to the practice squad this week. Little, who signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent this past offseason, has yet to practice with the team after spending the first six weeks of the season on the reserve/non-football injury list. Little suffered an ACL injury during preparations for the Senior Bowl. The Titans now have a three week period to activate him from the reserve/non-football injury list or choose to release the former Kentucky Wildcat. Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher said the team would wait later during the three week time frame to determine whether to activate Little.

Willy Aybar and Carl Crawford combined for nine hits and drove in seven runs,
as the Tampa Bay Rays again battered the Boston Red Sox, 13-4, in Game 4 of
the American League Championship Series, putting the defending World Series
champions on the brink of playoff elimination. Before this year, the Rays
never had a winning record. Now, they're one win away from their first World
Series appearance, taking a commanding 3-1 lead in the ALCS, capturing the
last two games by a combined 22-5 count. The Rays hit four homers in a big win
Monday, and one night later Carlos Pena, Evan Longoria and Aybar all went deep
off Tim Wakefield, as Tampa Bay knocked out the knuckleball specialist in the
third inning. Longoria has homered in three straight games, and Pena on back-
to-back nights. In fact, the duo hit consecutive homers in the first inning
off Wakefield, and Longoria set a rookie record with his fifth home run of the
playoffs. Crawford tied an ALCS record with five hits, going 5-for-5 with two
RBI and three runs scored. Aybar was 4-for-5 with five RBI for the Rays, who
have posted 31 runs and 10 homers in winning the last three games. Andy
Sonnanstine (2-0) threw a strong 7 1/3 innings, yielding six hits and four
runs, three of them earned. The Rays can clinch the series in Game 5 Thursday
night, again at Fenway Park. They'll have to face Daisuke Matsuzaka, who took
a no-hitter into the seventh inning before helping Boston to a 2-0 win in Game
1. James Shields, who pitched admirably in the series opener, will take the
mound for the Rays. You can hear the game on 1340 WNBS.

The Red Sox announced Tuesday that injured third baseman Mike Lowell will have
season-ending surgery. Lowell, the 2007 World Series Most Valuable Player, is
going to have surgery Monday in New York to address what the team deemed a
"bone spur-type" of injury atop the femur in his right leg as well as repair
the torn labrum in his right hip. He is expected to be ready in time for
spring training.

The NLCS resumes on Wednesday when the Philadelphia Phillies can punch their
ticket to the World Series for the first time since 1993. Shane Victorino and
Matt Stairs quieted Dodger Stadium with a pair of two-run, eighth-inning
homers in a 7-5 victory Monday night. Holding a 3-1 edge in the series,
Phillies ace Cole Hamels get the call on the mound for Game 5, while young
righty Chad Billingsley will try to keep the Dodgers' postseason alive and
send the series back to Philadelphia. Action begins tonight at 6:50 on WNBS.

Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner underwent successful arthroscopic
surgery on Tuesday on his right shoulder, which hampered him for the entire
2008 season. The decision for surgery was made after Hafner visited with Dr.
James Andrews in Alabama on Monday, and his shoulder condition had not
improved. Hafner's shoulder began to bother him in spring training, which
prompted a May trip to the disabled list. Dr. Andrews performed the clean out
of the right shoulder joint in Birmingham, and Hafner is expected to make a
full recovery by the beginning of the 2009 season after undergoing physical
therapy.

The NFL trade deadline came and went Tuesday with just one significant
transaction, as the Lions and Cowboys struck a deal that resulted in wide
receiver Roy Williams being shipped to Dallas. In exchange for Williams'
services and its seventh round draft choice in 2009, Detroit will receive
Dallas' first, third and sixth picks in next year's draft. Williams, a fifth-
year receiver out of Texas, has recorded 262 catches for 3,884 yards with 29
touchdowns in 60 career games. Shortly after announcing the deal, the
Cowboys announced that Williams has come to terms on a five-year contract
extension. The 26-year-old has struggled with the inconsistency of
Detroit's quarterbacks this season, grabbing 17 balls for 232 yards and a
touchdown. Dallas also signed punter Sam Paulescu on Tuesday, while placing
punter Mat McBriar on injured reserve with a fractured right foot. McBriar was
hit on the blocked punt that ended the overtime 30-24 loss at Arizona on
Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs were reportedly shopping perennial Pro Bowl tight end
Tony Gonzalez and star running back Larry Johnson but failed to move either of
the two high profile players before the 4 p.m. (et) deadline. Johnson is in
hot water again, this time reportedly facing a simple assault charge for
pushing a woman at a Kansas City nightclub. A Kansas City newspaper obtained
court and police documents and reported the 26-year-old woman accused Johnson
of using his open hand to push the left side of her head. Johnson faces a
December court date for the incident, which occurred February 24 of this year.

===

In other Dallas news on Tuesday, cornerback Adam Jones was suspended
indefinitely by the NFL for an altercation with a personal security guard at a
Dallas hotel last week. Jones will be suspended at least four games for
violating his reinstatement arrangement, which expected Jones to refrain
from any behavior that puts him, his team or the league in a negative light.
The Cowboys did not discipline Jones for Sunday's game against Arizona for the
incident, but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell apparently gathered enough
information to suspend the oft-troubled cornerback.

===

After trading wide receiver Roy Williams, the Lions announced they will also
be without starting quarterback Jon Kitna for the rest of the season. Kitna,
who had made 36 consecutive starts before Sunday's 12-10 loss to Minnesota,
was placed on the injured reserve list Tuesday due to a back injury. Kitna
originally left the Lions' Week 5, 34-7, loss to Chicago because of back
spasms. Dan Orlovsky replaced the veteran signal-caller in Week 5 and made his
first career start under center in the Minnesota game.

The Washington Redskins added former MVP running back Shaun Alexander to serve
as a backup to Clinton Portis on Tuesday. Alexander, 31, was on the free agent
market after being waived by the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason. He is
expected to practice with Washington on Wednesday and his status for Sunday's
game against Cleveland is unknown. The signing came at a crucial time for
Washington, as backup running back Ladell Betts is expected to miss two-to-
four weeks with a sprained knee suffered in Sunday's 19-17 loss to the St.
Louis Rams. Alexander earned the NFL's MVP award after the 2005 season in
which he rushed for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns. After leading Seattle to
Super Bowl XL, Alexander struggled through two injury-plagued seasons, rushing
for only 1,612 yards and 11 touchdowns combined in 2006 and 2007. In eight NFL
seasons, the Alabama product has 100 rushing touchdowns, a 4.3 yards-per-carry
average and 9,429 rushing yards, good for 25th all-time. He has also logged
214 catches for 1,511 yards and 12 TDs.

Pittsburgh Penguins edged the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, at Mellon Arena.
Brooks Orpik registered a goal and an assist for the Penguins, while Marc-

tallied for the Flyers, who have lost three consecutive games to start a
season for the first time since the lockout-shortened 1995 campaign.
