FLU CLINICS COMING FOR CALLOWAY STUDENTS
The Calloway County School System is offering free influenza vaccinations to any Calloway County student. Permission forms are being sent home with each student, and they must be completed, signed, and returned by October 27. The flu shot clinic will take place at all Calloway County elementary schools October 29, and at the middle school and high school on October 30.
CCSD AMONG THOSE GETTING HIGHWAY SAFETY GRANTS
Governor Steve Beshear was at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah yesterday where he announced a number of highway safety grants for our area. The 10 area counties and communities to receive this award include Ballard County Sheriff’s Department, Cadiz Police Department, Calloway County Sheriff’s Department, Eddyville Police Department, Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall County Health Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Mayfield Police Department, McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, and Paducah Police Department.
RYAN DEBATES WHITFIELD TAPE
Representative Ed Whitfield skipped what was to be a live debate broadcast on KET last night, and instead sent a taped segment to be aired after his challenger answered questions from a panel of reporters. Challenger Heather Ryan of Paducah said she discovered just hours before her scheduled appearance that Kentucky Educational Television would allow Whitfield to skip the debate, but still get televised time. Whitfield campaign spokeswoman Kristin Walker said Tuesday that the congressman was unable to attend the debate because of previously scheduled political rallies in the district. During the forum, Ryan repeatedly pointed out Whitfield's absence. She criticized Whitfield for voting to authorize what she called an illegal war in Iraq and failing to provide health care coverage for the uninsured. As for the $700 billion federal financial system bailout bill, Ryan said she would have voted against it as Whitfield did, but for different reasons.
BOMB SCARE YIELDS NO BOMB
Yesterday 53-year old Danny Cathey of Graves County, was arrested and charged with Trafficking in Controlled Substance, Possession of Controlled Substance, Illegal Sale/Possession/Distribution of a Legend Drug, and Improper Registration. The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop at KY 94 and KY 1099. Subsequent to a search of Cathey's vehicle, Troopers found what was believed to be a bomb. The road was closed for about 8 hours. ATF and the Paducah city police department bomb squad assessed the vehicle and determined it was not a bomb.
CADIZ WOMAN KILLED
A Cadiz woman died from injuries she suffered in a two-vehicle wreck about 12:30 p.m. yesterday on the U.S. 68 bypass at Lakota Drive. 67-year old Lynnea Kruger died of multiple blunt force trauma. She was riding in a pickup truck driven by 76-year old Madison Kruger of Cadiz. According to police, he made a left turn into the path of a truck driven by 46-year old Willard Gilstrap of Horse Branch. Madison Kruger was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Gilstrap was treated at the scene for minor injuries
SEMI BLOCKS ROAD FOR 4 HOURS
An semi truck hauling seafood overturned yesterday morning and blocked U.S. 45 between Water Valley and Wingo for four hours. 37-year old Kevin Duncans of Missouri City, Texas, told Graves County deputies that he was trying to avoid hitting a deer and lost control of his truck which was hauling frozen seafood and spilled out when the rig landed on its side. The Graves County Sheriff’s Department investigated. Another truck came in to take the remaining frozen seafood away after the local health department cleared it. Most of the seafood was salvaged.
NOBODY HURT IN MARSHALL CO. FIRE
No one was hurt in a Tuesday evening fire that destroyed a mobile home off Tubbs Road in the Fairdealing area of Marshall County. The mobile home belonged to Ricky Bond, who was not home when the fire began. Fairdealing-Olive firefighters responded to the scene at 7:10 p.m. and almost immediately asked for aid from the Benton Fire Department. Firefighters were able to save some of Bond’s personal belongings. The fire appears to have started in the living room, . The mobile home was not connected to electricity or gas, and neighbors said Bond used candles for light.
AVERY ANNOUNCES DONOR PROGRESS
Calloway County Circuit clerk Linda Avery is proud to announce that since May 2007 more than 4000 names have been added to the registry of organ donors. This has been accomplished with the Trust for Life initiative which began in 1992, and includes a one dollar donation with the renewal of a driver’s license that goes to education of organ donation statewide. There is still a need for organ donor registration as more than 700 Kentuckians are on waiting lists for life saving organ donation.
FALL ON THE FARM SATURDAY
Families from across the region are invited to attend the fifth annual Fall On The Farm at Murray State University on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The fun-filled, child-centered family event will be held at MSU’s Pullen Farm Complex, located on the corner of Hwy. 94W and Doran Road. Fall on the Farm provides a fun, yet educational avenue for children and adults alike to share in traditional autumn activities typical in rural settings, while also learning how agriculture relates to other aspects of the community and daily life. Activities include a petting zoo, pony rides, corn maze, rubber duck races, pumpkin slingshot, giant slide, pumpkin painting and face painting. Areas have also been prepared where kids can test their driving skills on a pedal tractor course, jump into a corn pit, milk cows and make butter. Tours of the Murray State greenhouse will be available. Admission to Fall on the Farm is $5 per person.
COAST GUARD LOOKING FOR HELP
The U.S. coast guard auxiliary is looking for volunteers. No experience is necessary as you will be taught everything you need to know by trained professionals. There is no limit or requirement as to the hours you must volunteer. The next meeting is tomorrow. If you are interested please call 270-522-8776.
ACROSS KENTUCKY
The first soldier from Hopkins County to die in the Iraq War will be buried today. Funeral services will be held today for Sergeant William Patrick Rudd. The 27-year-old Army ranger was fatally wounded October 5th on a mission in Iraq. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in downtown Madisonville with burial with full military honors at Browder Cemetery. The governor has directed flags be lowered to half-staff until sunset today in recognition of Sergeant Rudd.
A worker was killed when he came too close to a power line. The "Courier Journal" reports 59-year-old Gary G. Crow of Alton, Texas, was working at the Citgo Petroleum plant. He was performing routine maintenance from an elevated bucket on a truck when he struck at live power line.
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission says it needs to dramatically increase its budget to properly do its job. The commission wants to add eight full-time employees and 18 part-time for an independent wagering monitoring system, and have the state pay for drug testing at tracks. The proposals would increase the commission budget from three-million dollars annually to almost eight-million dollars.
Concerned about fire dangers, officials at the Daniel Boone National Forest say they bringing in additional law enforcement officers from other national forests. They say almost half the citations law enforcement officers wrote at the forest and Red River Gorge last weekend were for violations of the campfire ban. And with fire conditions so critical, they need more enforcement personnel in Kentucky.
There are more than 700 acres of grape vines in Kentucky, and numerous wineries. Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer says Kentucky is now producing wine that is receiving national attention. Commissioner Farmer says it's Grape and Wine Month. He's urging Kentuckians to take some time and visit one of the state's wineries.
