Green Bay Packers middle linebacker Nick Barnett will miss the remainder of
the season because of a torn knee ligament. Barnett was hurt early in the
third quarter of Sunday's game against Minnesota while trying to make a tackle
on Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said
Monday that Barnett will need surgery. The sixth-year pro out of Oregon State
was Green Bay's leading tackler four times in his first five seasons.

New Orleans Saints cornerback Mike McKenzie needs surgery to repair a
fractured right patella suffered during Sunday's 34-20 loss to the Atlanta
Falcons and will be placed on injured reserve. McKenzie was injured trying to
defend a pass intended for Atlanta's Michael Jenkins. He registered two

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria and Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany
Soto have been named the Jackie Robinson Award winners as the top rookies in
the American and National League, respectively, as voted on by members of the
Baseball Writers' Association of America. Longoria, Tampa Bay's first Rookie
of the Year Award winner, placed first on all 28 ballots cast and received a
perfect total of 140 points to become the AL's first unanimous selection since
Nomar Garciaparra in 1997. Soto, meanwhile, edged Cincinnati first baseman
Joey Votto by 82 points, placing first on 31 of 32 ballots cast by two writers

The Baseball Writers Association of America will continue to dole out their
postseason awards on Tuesday, when the National League's Cy Young Award winner
will be announced. San Francisco righty Tim Lincecum figures to be the front
runner after an impressive second season that saw him win 18 games for the 72-
win Giants. He also led the majors in strikeouts with 265 and was second in
the NL with a 2.62 earned run average. Lincecum, the 10th overall pick by the
Giants in the 2006 draft, has already collected some hardware this offseason,
winning both the Players Choice and Sporting News NL pitcher-of-the-year
awards. Should Lincecum win on Tuesday, he would join lefty Mike McCormick
(1967) as the franchise's only Cy Young winners. Lincecum's main competition
will come from the 2006 winner of this award, Arizona righty Brandon Webb, who
was 22-7 with an 3.30 ERA. Webb won his first nine starts of the year, but
endured a stretch from May 21-June 22 that saw him win just two of seven
starts.

Oakland Athletics in exchange for reliever Huston Street, starting pitcher
Greg Smith and outfield prospect Carlos Gonzalez, according to a report on the
team's Web site. The trade was not announced on Monday as the clubs were
apparently still processing the deal. Holliday, a two-time All-Star, hit .321
last season - his fourth straight .300 campaign - but saw his power numbers
dip, as he hit 25 home runs with 88 RBI. It was the first time since 2005 that
he failed to top 30 HRs and 100 RBIs. He had been the runner-up to
Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins for the NL MVP Award in 2007 when he set career-
highs, hitting .340 with 36 home runs and 137 RBI.
