B.J. Upton and Rocco Baldelli each hit a three- run homer as Tampa Bay crushed
Boston, 9-1, in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Fenway
Park. Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena also went deep for the Rays, who took a
2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series with the four-homer attack. The suddenly
high-powered Tampa Bay bats have slammed seven homers in the last two
contests. Matt Garza (1-1) earned the win by going six-plus innings and
scattering six hits and allowing the one run, with five strikeouts and three
walks. Jacoby Ellsbury knocked in the lone run for the Red Sox, who have
dropped the last two games in the set, including a marathon 9-8, 11-inning
defeat Saturday night. Dustin Pedroia and Mark Kotsay each collected two hits
in the loss. Jon Lester (1-1) was shelled for eight hits and five runs -- four
earned -- over 5 2/3 innings. The left-hander fanned seven and walked two but
surrendered a pair of home runs. Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night, again
at Fenway Park. Boston's Tim Wakefield and the Rays' Andy Sonnanstine are
scheduled to take the mound.

Shane Victorino's two-run homer tied the game in the eighth, and Matt Stairs
delivered the go-ahead pinch-hit two-run shot later in the same frame as the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Dodgers, 7-5, to take a commanding 3-1 series
lead after four games of the National League Championship Series. The Phillies
are now one victory away from their first World Series appearance since 1993.
Philadelphia will turn to ace Cole Hamels to punch their ticket to the Fall
Classic. He will be opposed in Wednesday's Game 5 by Chad Billingsley. The
teams traded four-game sweeps in the regular season and each continued the
home-cooking trend by winning at home until Monday.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is expected to be sidelined for a month
with a broken pinkie finger on his throwing hand. Romo was hurt on the first
play of overtime in Sunday's 30-24 setback at Arizona, as he was stripped of
the football by Chike Okeafor during a scramble. He stayed on the field for
what turned out to be the final two offensive plays of the game -- both
incomplete passes -- as the Cowboys lost on a blocked punt returned for a
touchdown. Brad Johnson, a Super Bowl winning quarterback with Tampa Bay, is
expected to take over as the starter for next week's game against St. Louis.
The 40-year-old veteran, who last started an NFL game on December 17, 2006
with Minnesota, will also likely play the following two games against Tampa
Bay and the New York Giants before the club's bye on November 9. Romo could
possibly return for the November 16 contest at Washington. There was also more
bad news for Dallas, as rookie running back Felix Jones is reportedly going to

Derek Anderson threw for 310 yards and a pair of scores to lead a potent
offensive attack, and the Browns picked off Eli Manning three times, on the
way to a 35-14 thrashing of the New York Giants, handing the defending Super
Bowl champions their first loss of the season. Eric Wright had the back-
breaking interception for the Browns, returning the ball 94 yards for a score
with 8:07 remaining in the final quarter. The Browns (2-3), who were coming
off their bye week after beating Cincinnati on September 28, racked up 454
yards of offense and didn't punt the entire game. They had four touchdowns for
the season coming into the contest, but they equaled that total Monday by
using a dominating offensive line. Manning, the reigning Super Bowl MVP,
completed 18-of-28 passes for 196 yards with a score for New York (4-1), which
had won its previous 12 games outside Giants Stadium. Derrick Ward ran for 101
yards for the Giants, while Brandon Jacobs added 67 yards and a TD on the
ground in defeat.

Cincinnati Bengals starting quarterback Carson Palmer will likely miss another
week because of a sore throwing elbow, after consultation with an elbow
specialist. Palmer stayed in New York following the Bengals' 26-14 loss to the
Jets on Sunday and visited with Mets team physician and elbow specialist Dr.
David Altchek. At his press conference on Monday, Cincinnati head coach Marvin
Lewis said Altchek recommended a "further conservative approach," which he
said would put him out for this upcoming Sunday's game against Pittsburgh.
Lewis, though, did not commit to ruling Palmer out and said no option was
closed off before he talked with the quarterback. Palmer has sat out a pair of
games this season -- the Jets game and a September 28 contest against
Cleveland -- though he did play on October 5 against Dallas.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will miss at least one more week
due to a bulging disc in his back that is causing problems with his sore knee.
Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said in his press conference on Monday that
Hasselbeck will miss Sunday night's game at Tampa Bay. Hasselbeck saw a
specialist in Los Angeles, who found that the disk problem in his back was
causing the weakness in the quarterback's right knee. Hasselbeck hyperextended
the knee in the Seahawks' loss to the New York Giants on October 5.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier, who was shot on
September 2 and had to have his left leg amputated, was released from the
hospital on Monday. He was shot 14 times and is now paralyzed from the waist
down. He will continue his rehabilitation from an undisclosed location since
his attacker is still at large. Collier, 26, was shot outside an apartment
complex in Jacksonville while waiting in a Cadillac Escalade. Someone walked
up and fired several times at Collier, who was driving, while Pettway was not
injured. No motive has been found for the attack, but investigators said that
he appeared to have been targeted.

Chicago Bears guard Terrence Metcalf was suspended four games without pay by
the NFL on Monday for violating the league's policy on anabolic steroids and
related substances. The suspension is set to begin immediately, and the 30-
year-old will not be eligible to return until Monday, November 17 -- one day
after the Bears' game against the Green Bay Packers. Metcalf is an Ole Miss
product and was the third-round pick of the Bears in 2002.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday and one player with Hall of Fame credentials
could be going elsewhere. The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly trying to
honor perennial Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez and his request for a trade
to a contender before the 4 p.m. (et) deadline. The Giants, Packers and Bills
are reportedly among the teams vying to land Gonzalez. The Chiefs have also
reportedly been trying to unload running back Larry Johnson in a trade.

New York Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov passed away Monday at the age of
19 after collapsing on the bench during a game in Russia. Cherepanov was
playing as a forward for Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League when
the tragedy occurred. He fell unconscious in the third period and attempts to
revive Cherepanov were unsuccessful. Details on what caused the collapse have
not been released. Cherepanov was selected by New York with the 17th overall
pick in the 2007 draft. He was playing on the same Russian team as Jaromir
Jagr, who left the Rangers to sign a two-year deal with Avangard Omsk this
past summer. The Barnaul, Russia native was off to an excellent start to the
KHL season, registering seven goals and five assists in 14 games.

Clemson University head football coach Tommy Bowden has stepped down
following a 3-3 start to a season that began with lofty expectations.
After meeting twice on Monday morning with athletic director Terry Don
Phillips, it was agreed that Bowden would no longer be the school's head
coach. Assistant head coach/wide receivers coach Dabo Swinney will take over
on an interim basis. Bowden was in his 10th year with Clemson, which was
ranked ninth in the preseason but opened with a humbling 34-10 setback
against Alabama in the Georgia Dome. Then came victories over the Citadel,
North Carolina State and South Carolina State, before consecutive losses to
Maryland and Wake Forest. The Tigers have posted a record of 72-45 under
Bowden, who agreed to a contract extension last December after reports
surfaced that he spoke with Arkansas about its coaching vacancy.

North Carolina senior wide receiver Brandon Tate will miss the remainder of
the season because of a torn ligaments in his right knee. Tate was hurt during
the first quarter of Saturday's game against Notre Dame and tests revealed
both a torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligament. He is expected
to undergo surgery later this week. With his collegiate career at an end, Tate
finishes as the NCAA's all-time leader in combined kick return yards with
3,523. He was leading the ACC in all-purpose yards this season with 194.6 per
game heading into Saturday's action.

Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said the Commodores are expected to make a
change at quarterback for Saturday's road game at Georgia and will go with
junior Mackenzi Adams instead of senior Chris Nickson. The change comes on the
heels of a 17-14 loss over the weekend to Mississippi State, when Vandy had
its lowest offensive output of Johnson's tenure with only 107 yards of total
offense. It was the fewest yards by the Commodores since 1996. The Commodores
are ranked 22nd this week, while Georgia is 10th. Vanderbilt has the 117th-
ranked offense in the nation. Nickson was pulled from the Mississippi State
game after throwing an interception early in the fourth quarter, which led to
the game-winning touchdown. Adams, though, led the Commodores to a 10-play,
57-yard march, which ended in a Jeff Jennings TD run, but Vandy couldn't come
back.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown has suffered an injury Monday
morning and will retire. The three-year-old injured his right front hoof
Monday morning while training at Aqueduct, and will not race in this year's $5
million Breeders' Cup Classic versus 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin. Trainer
Rick Dutrow Jr. said it looked like Big Brown "grabbed his hoof in some kind
of way." Owned by IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa Jr., Big Brown, who also won the
Florida Derby, Haskell Invitational and Monmouth Stakes this year, has
captured seven of eight career starts for more than $3.6 million. He is set to
enter stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky.
