TWO INJURED IN SEMI ACCIDENT
An overturned tractor-trailer rig caused a traffic jam on the Purchase Parkway for five hours Monday. 38-year old Angel DePriest of Grand Rivers was parked in the emergency lane under the Symsonia Highway overpass at the Benton exit when she began trying to merge into traffic. 36-year old Christopher McClure of Farmington was driving south in his tractor-trailer when it hit DePriest’s pickup truck. It spun around the cab of the tractor-trailer and landed in the median. The tractor-trailer ran off the right shoulder, struck and embankment and landed on the driver’s side. McClure and DePriest were taken to Marshall County Hospital.
BOAZ MAN JAILED
Marshall County deputy sheriffs arrested a Boaz man Monday at Crop Production Services after an employee said he saw someone trying to steal anhydrous ammonia. Deputies found 31-year old Jeffrey Collier hiding in tall grass, Chief Deputy Sheriff David Maddox said they charged him with attempted theft of anhydrous ammonia and trespassing.
SKID MILL MANAGER CHARGED
Catherine Harrison is the manager of the Wickliffe Skid Mill, and she was charged with disorderly conduct at the scene of the fire that destroyed the building Friday. Police said she came to the scene and was attempting to go to the office, putting both her and police officers at risk. The fire remains under investigation.
LAKER BAND WINS AGAIN
The Calloway County High School Laker Band competed in the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational on Saturday. The Laker Band was awarded First Place in Class C and Superior Ratings for Band, Percussion, Guard, and Field Commander. In overall competition, Calloway County High School captured Chancellor's Cups by earning the highest score in their division.
REPAVING IN MURRAY BEGINS ON MAIN STREET
A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is starting milling and paving work this week on Main Street in Murray. Traffic will be restricted to one lane at various locations on Main Street as the work progresses. The milling portion of the work is expected to continue today with asphalt paving over the next week to 10 days.
KTC AUTHORIZES TVA WORK ZONE
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has authorized the Tennessee Valley Authority to slow traffic for short intervals on Interstate 24 starting Thursday. The first work zone and rolling road block is tentatively planned at I-24 mile point 21.5 in Marshall County on October 16, 17 or 18 between 7:00 and 5:30.
DANIEL COMPLETES TRAINING
Loretta Daniel, interim director of the Innovation and Commercialization Center at Murray State University, recently completed the National Business Incubation Association’s Incubator Management Certificate Program. The training program served to provide an overview of the best practices to use in core activities and responsibilities incubator managers are required to conduct. Unlike similar training programs, the NBIA’s Incubator Management Certificate Program requires participants to attend three full-day sessions, five workshops and two conferences over a year-long span, for a total of 26 hours of training. Daniel has worked with Murray State’s Innovation and Commercialization Center, which operates in 20 counties in six statewide offices, for four years. She has been employed at Murray State for eight years, earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from MSU, and is the former owner of several successful small businesses.
MANY RELEASED INMATES BACK IN JAIL
A recent report says at least 14 percent of inmates freed under the state's early release program have been charged with crimes. Of the 1,004 inmates released as of mid-September, 146 have been arrested or charged again by grand juries. At least 16 of the 146 new offenders are accused of committing violent crimes. Kentucky's early release program was authorized by this year's budget bill in an effort to save $30 million over the next two years. About 3,600 inmates or parolees - including murderers, rapists and robbers - have been released under the new calculations.
ANOTHER EVENT FOR GUNNER
"Glow for Gunner" is this Thursday night at 8 at Mike Miller Park in Draffenville. The event is to shown support for Gunner Gillespie, the seven-year-old from Marshall County who is battling cancer.
ACROSS KENTUCKY
Representatives from a number of law enforcement agencies will gather in Harrodsburg this morning. A memorial service is being held for Harrodsburg Police Officer Regina Nickles. She gave her life while on duty ten years ago. She was Harrodsburg's only woman officer at the time, and was also running for sheriff. Nickles was fatally wounded while investigating a report of a suspicious person in a factory parking lot.
A worker a Corbin service station averted a robbery last night. A man with a long gun entered the Swifty Gas Station on the Cumberland Highway and demanded money. But instead of handing over the money, an employee told the robber police had already been called. The would-be robber fled. There were no injuries.
Police in Woodford County are investigating the disappearance of Patricia Last. The 65-year-old farm owner was last heard from on Friday night. Police have been searching the area.
Restaurants want their customers in Midway and Versailles to be able to order a drink with their meals on Sundays. A group of eight restaurant owners are taking their request to Woodford Fiscal County today. It's not the first time the idea has been brought UP. Woodford Fiscal Court took no action on a similar request several years ago.
The Magoffin County deputy judge executive faces charges after a sex sting operation. Kentucky Internet Crimes Against Children Task officers have charged 28-year-old Walter Edward Hardin of Salyersville. Hardin is the deputy judge executive of Magoffin County, and his father, Charles "Doc" Hardin, is Magoffin Judge Executive. Officers tell WLEX-TV that Hardin believed he was coming to Lexington to engage in sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was arrested.
A team of agencies is working to solve the series of fires on the Eastern Kentucky University campus. EKU Police are offering a one-thousand-dollar reward, and the Richmond Fire Department and Kentucky State Fire Marshal's Office are assisting in the investigation. Last week, there four suspicious fires on campus. Three fires were in a dorm and a fourth was in another building.
