Thursday Sports Update

TSU WINS EXHIBITION GAME
Darious Cox had 21 points and 12 rebounds as Tennessee State walloped Trevecca Nazerene 101-75 last night in exhibition basketball. Gerald Robinson Jr. and Jerrell Robinson added 20 points each. TSU led after the first half shooting 55 percent from the field. Freshman Parker Smith made his debut as a Tiger, hitting 6-of-11, 4-of-9 from behind the arch, for 17 points.

JSU OFFICIALLY GOING GREEN
Three freshmen led a group of five Gamecocks in double figures when the James Green era got underway with a 83-76 Jacksonville State exhibition win over West Georgia. Geddes Robinson led the Gamecocks with 14 points. Senior Jonathan Toles added 13 points for the Gamecocks on 4-for-6 shooting, while junior Amadou Mbodji pitched in a double-double with 11 and 12 rebounds. His efforts on the glass helped JSU to a 42-34 rebounding advantage. Tonight, Austin Peay hosts Central Missouri in exhibition action. You can watch exhibition games free online at OVCSPORTS.TV

RACER MEN AND WOMEN PLAY NEXT WEEK
The Murray State men's basketball team will provide fans with their only exhibition look of the season when the Racers welcome Bethel Tuesday night. Murray will open the season a week from Saturday when they host Lyon College. You can hear all the games on 1340 WNBS and Froggy 103.7...The Racer women open the season a week from tomorrow night as they travel to Western Kentucky. You can hear that game on Froggy.

RACERS HOSTING OVC SOCCER TOURNEY
The Murray State Racers play the biggest soccer match in the program’s eight–year history Friday when they host the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at Cutchin Field. The semifinals get underway at 10 a.m. at Cutchin Field when No. 2 seed Eastern Kentucky plays No. 3 UT Martin. The Racers play No. 4 Morehead State at 1pm. The OVC Championship match is Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner moves on to the NCAA Tournament.

RACERS VS SEMO SATURDAY
With hopes for a share of a championship gone after Saturday's loss at Eastern Illinois, Murray State welcomes Southeast Missouri to Stewart Stadiuim on Saturday. The Redhawks shocked Tennessee State two weeks ago, and led Eastern Kentucky through three quarters last week before eventually losing. Racer head coach Matt Griffin is impressed with the progress the Redhawks have made. The game features the two top passing teams in the OVC, but the Racers have not through a touchdown pass in the last two games. Kickoff time Saturday is 1pm, with airtime at 12:30 on 1340 WNBS.

CATS VS DAWGS
Kentucky is unfazed by the daunting task of playing No. 14 Georgia. Coach Rich Brooks says the Wildcats (6-3, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) will not be intimidated against the Bulldogs (7-2, 4-2), a team he has described as one of the best in the nation, and even feels the game will be a close one. If the defense plays as it has most of the year, Brooks said he is confident the game could remain tight. The biggest issue would be adding life to what has often been an anemic offense. Freshman Randall Cobb will get the start against at quarterback for the Wildcats, though sophomore Mike Hartline will also see some action.

VOLS PLAYERS REACT TO FULMER MOVE
Tennessee Vols players say they are disappointed by the university's decision to replace head coach Phillip Fulmer after the season. Fulmer agreed this week to step down, accepting a six million dollar buyout. The Vols are 3-and-6, and must win their remaining games against Wyoming, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky to avoid a losing season and become bowl eligible. Several players say they fell partly responsible for Fulmer's dismissal, but others say it's unfair to blame injuries and off-the field problems on the coach. In yet another off-the-field incident, cornerback Brent Vinson missed last Saturday's game at South Carolina following an arrest for marijuana possession and an open container. The Vols host Wyoming this Saturday, with kickoff at noon central time.

YADDY STRIKES GOLD
Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has his first Gold Glove. He was named the best catcher in the National League yesterday after throwing out 18-of-52 base stealers last season. He was charged with just 5 passed balls for the entire season. Molina was the only Card to receive a Gold Glove this season, and is just the third Redbird catcher to be recognized.

with a 45-14 drubbing of Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois.
Davis tossed for 300 yards while connecting on a 18-of-22 throws for Ball
State (9-0, 5-0 MAC), which has won its first nine games for the first time
since the 1965 campaign. Louis Johnson was Davis' favorite target with six

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly offered left fielder Manny Ramirez
the second-highest annual salary in the majors, behind New York Yankees third
baseman Alex Rodriguez. According to a Los Angeles newspaper, Dodgers
general manager Ned Colletti extended the offer at the general managers'
meetings to the 12-time All-Star and MVP of the 2004 World Series. Ramirez,
who is an unrestricted free agent, just completed an eight-year, $160 million
contract he signed with Boston in 2001. The Dodgers acquired the slugger
from the Red Sox on July 31, and Ramirez led LA to the NL Championship Series
before losing to World Series champion Philadelphia. Rodriguez makes $27.5
million annually based on the 10-year contract he signed in December of
2007, although his yearly salary fluctuates from $32 million for the upcoming
season to $20 million at the conclusion of the deal. The 36-year-old Ramirez
is believed to have been offered a two-year deal worth $50 million with a club
option for 2011, according to a few media sources. Ramirez hit .396 with 17
homers and 53 RBI in just 53 games after joining the Dodgers, and batted .299
with 20 homers and 68 RBI in 100 contests for Boston in 2008.

The Dodgers declined a $9.25 million option on pitcher Brad Penny and instead
bought out their 2008 Opening Day starter for $2 million on Wednesday. Penny,
30, joins a number of Dodgers that have become free agents this offseason,
including fellow starter Derek Lowe, and offensive stars Manny Ramirez and
Rafael Furcal. The right-handed Penny had won 16 games in each of his previous
two seasons with LA, but went just 6-9 with a 6.27 earned run average in his
injured-plagued 2008 campaign that saw him start just 17 games.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Greg Maddux extended his own record for the most
Gold Glove Awards, capturing his 18th, and was among the National League
winners announced Wednesday. Joining Maddux on the NL Gold Glove roster was
shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who helped the Philadelphia Phillies capture the
World Series this season. It was the second consecutive Gold Glove for
Rollins, who in 2007 also won NL MVP honors. Additionally, a pair of New York
Mets won Gold Glove Awards at their respective positions. Third baseman David
Wright earned his second, having also won last season, and center fielder
Carlos Beltran won for the third consecutive year. The remaining NL Gold Glove
Awards went to first-time winners: St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina,
San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Cincinnati Reds second baseman
Brandon Phillips, along with the Pirates' Nate McLouth and Phillies' Shane
Victorino in the outfield. American League winners will be announced on
Thursday.

The New York Yankees accounted for half of the eight players filing for free
agency Wednesday. New York's Jason Giambi, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano and
Damaso Marte will each be testing the free agent waters this offseason.
Giambi finished off his seventh year in pinstripes with a .247 average, 32
home runs and 96 runs batted in. Mussina was a 20-game winner for the first
time in his 18-year career last season, posting a 3.37 ERA in 34 starts.
Mussina, who turns 40 in December, needs 30 wins to reach 300 for his career.
The oft-injured Pavano returned from reconstructive elbow surgery this past
August and went 4-2 with a 5.77 ERA in seven starts down the stretch for New
York. Atlanta Braves hurlers Tom Glavine and Mike Hampton will also be testing
the market. Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Jeff Kent and Tampa Bay reliever
Trever Miller rounded out the filings.

=== COLLEGE FOOTBALL ===

There are a pair of top 25 games on the schedule Thursday night. Mountain West
Conference supremacy is on the line, as the 10th-ranked Utah Utes entertain
the 11th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs. The Utes are 9-0 and ranked eighth in the
BCS standings. Heading into Thursday, the Horned Frogs, who are 12th in the
BCS, are already 6-0 against the rest of the MWC and have just a single loss
during 2008, a 35-10 setback to Oklahoma. Also Thursday, ACC foes will collide
in Blacksburg, as the Virginia Tech Hokies host the 23rd-ranked Maryland
Terrapins. Maryland has won five of its last six games to climb into first
place in the ACC's Atlantic Division.

===

Kansas State head football coach Ron Prince will not return for the 2009
season, the school announced Wednesday. The Wildcats are 4-5 this season and
have lost three consecutive contests. Kansas State went 5-7 in the 2007
campaign and ended that season with four consecutive losses. In two-plus
seasons at Kansas State, Prince's teams have gone 16-18. The Wildcats went 7-6
with a trip to the Texas Bowl in 2006, his first season.

=== NFL ===

The Brady Quinn era will begin under the bright primetime lights on Thursday
night, when the signal-caller leads the Cleveland Browns into battle against
the visiting Denver Broncos. Quinn, the No. 22 overall pick in the 2007 NFL
Draft, will finally get a chance to lead the Cleveland offense after 24 games
spent as a backup behind Derek Anderson and, briefly, Charlie Frye. The
highly-decorated former collegian at Notre Dame will be charged with breathing
some life into an offense that has been a sputtering disappointment with
Anderson at the controls this season, averaging just 17.8 points per game. The
Browns are 3-5, while Denver enters Week 10 at 4-4, good enough for first
place in an AFC West regarded by most as the worst division in football.

===

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who has missed the last three games with
a fractured pinkie on his throwing hand, returned to practice Wednesday and is
optimistic to play in the team's next contest. Even though Romo threw some
passes at practice a few weeks ago prior to Dallas' loss to the Rams, Romo was
wearing a small splint Wednesday instead of the cast that restricted his grip
of the ball. The Cowboys are in their bye week with their next game November
16 at Washington. Romo suffered his injury on October 12 in an overtime loss
to the Arizona Cardinals. Brad Johnson has started the last three weeks in
Romo's place and the Cowboys have gone 1-2 in those games to fall to 5-4 this
season, into last place in the NFC East.

===

The Oakland Raiders released cornerback DeAngelo Hall on Wednesday, just eight
games into a seven-year contract worth up to $70 million. Hall has collected
$8 million of that money and would be owed $16.5 million in injury-guaranteed
bonuses for next season. The Raiders chose to take that money out of the
equation by waiving him. As part of the off-season deal with the Atlanta
Falcons, Oakland traded away a second-round draft choice for the fifth-year
pro out of Virginia Tech. Hall amassed 48 tackles and a half sack with a team-
high three interceptions over eight contests with the Raiders this season.
Over his five-plus seasons in the league, the 24-year-old has 20
interceptions, two returned for scores, and 277 tackles.

The New York Giants have placed wide receiver David Tyree on injured reserve,
ending the Super Bowl hero's season before it even began. Tyree, whose
heroic catch in last year's Super Bowl helped the Giants pull off the upset
of New England, has not played this season. The Giants initially placed Tyree
on the physically unable to perform list after he underwent knee surgery in
April. He was eligible to begin practicing on October 15, but a hamstring
injury has also hindered his efforts to return and the team had until
Wednesday to either place him on the active roster or put him on IR. Tyree had
one of the most unforgettable plays in Super Bowl history last February in
Arizona. He leapt to make a catch on the Giants' go-ahead drive in the fourth
quarter and came down with the ball secured against his helmet as he fell to
the turf. The 28-year-old Syracuse product was also a special teams standout,
earning Pro Bowl honors in 2005.

=== NBA ===

Allen Iverson did not play in the Detroit Pistons' 100-93 win Wednesday
against the Toronto Raptors. Iverson came to the Pistons in a blockbuster
trade Monday that brought the guard from Denver in exchange for point guard
Chauncey Billups, forward Antonio McDyess and center Cheikh Samb. But Iverson,
who was in Toronto with the club, passed a physical while Billups did not
have a physical -- a requirement for finalizing the deal. Iverson is averaging
18.7 points and 6.7 assists through three games this season.

=== NHL ===

The Dallas Stars signed forward Mark Parrish to a one-year contract worth
$500,000 on Wednesday. Parrish was placed on waivers by Minnesota in late July
due to salary cap concerns. The Wild originally signed him to a five-year
contract in July 2006. The 31-year-old Minnesota native scored a career-low 16
goals and collected 14 assists in 66 games last season for the Wild.
Originally selected by the Colorado Avalanche in third round of the 1996
draft, Parrish has 208 goals and 164 assists in 660 career games with the
Panthers, Islanders, Kings and Wild.

=== TENNIS ===

The powerful Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, were among Wednesday's round-
robin winners at the season-ending $4.55 million Sony Ericsson Championships.
A third-seeded former world No. 1 Serena saw her first action of the week and
moved to 1-0 in the four-player Maroon Group with a 6-4, 6-1 pasting of
second-seeded French Open and Olympic runner-up Dinara Safina, who is a
disappointing 0-2 already this week and has all but been eliminated from
semifinal contention this weekend. In another Maroon Group bout, a seventh-
seeded former top-ranked Venus snuck past fifth-seeded Olympic gold medalist
Elena Dementieva 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Day 2 on the hardcourts at Khalifa Tennis
Complex. Venus is now 2-0 and appears well on her way to the semis, while
Dementieva fell to 0-1. On Thursday, a marquee round-robin affair will come
when the nine-time major champion Serena battles the seven-time major titlist
Venus in a rematch of the Wimbledon final, which was won by Venus. Serena was
this year's U.S. Open champ.
