LANE AND TOWNSEL HONORED
Defense and special teams played a key role in Murray State’s victory over Southeast Missouri on Saturday afternoon and for those efforts defensive end Austen Lane was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week, while wide receiver Derrick Townsel earned OVC Specialist of the Week honors. Lane finished 3.5 sacks which was the most for a Racer since Marcus White had three sacks against Eastern Kentucky back in 2003. Lane also totaled seven tackles, a quarterback hurry and a fumble recovery. The 3.5 sacks raised his season total to 10 sacks and within a half a sack of tieing the school record of 10.5 set by Marcus Stepp and Anthony Hutch. His season total also ranks fourth in the FCS this season.

Townsel earned the specialist honor after taking a punt 64 yards for a touchdown. Peyton Manning threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-
ahead score to Dominic Rhodes with 3:04 to play, as the Indianapolis Colts
hung on for a 24-20 win over the Steelers, their first win in Pittsburgh in 40
years. The Colts franchise last won in the Steel City in 1968 and had gone
0-12 in Pittsburgh, including the playoffs, between that win and Sunday.
Reggie Wayne had six catches for 114 yards, and Tim Jennings made a big
interception to set up the go-ahead score for the Colts (5-4), who have won
two straight to get back above .500 on the season. Manning completed 21-of-40
passes and was not intercepted. Ben Roethlisberger, playing despite a shoulder
injury that kept him out of practice until Friday, completed 30-of-42 passes
for 284 yards with three interceptions for the Steelers (6-3), who fell into a
first-place tie in the AFC North with Baltimore. The Ravens ripped Houston,
41-13, on Sunday. Hines Ward had nine grabs for 116 yards, and Mewelde Moore,
filling in for the injured Willie Parker, who was sidelined for the fifth time
in six weeks, rushed for 57 yards and two scores on 24 carries.

===

Brandon Jacobs ran for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Giants won
a key challenge in the third quarter and held on to beat the Philadelphia
Eagles, 36-31, in a pivotal NFC East battle. Eli Manning completed 17-of-31
passes for 191 yards with a pair of scores and was intercepted once for the
Giants (8-1), who own a two-game lead on Washington in the division. Donovan
McNabb connected on 17-of-36 passes for 194 yards with three scores and an
interception for the Eagles (5-4), who fell to 0-3 in the NFC East and into
a last-place tie with Dallas in the division.

===

Maurice Jones-Drew ran for three touchdowns as the Jacksonville Jaguars
crushed the winless Detroit Lions, 38-14, at Ford Field. Jones-Drew finished
the game with 70 yards on 11 carries while David Garrard went 18-for-27 for
238 yards and two scores for the Jaguars (4-5), who stopped a two-game slide.
Fred Taylor had 80 yards on 18 carries. Daunte Culpepper, who was signed on
Tuesday, started the game in place of the injured Dan Orlovsky, but was
ineffective as he went just 5-for-10 with 104 yards and an interception for
the winless Lions (0-9), who have dropped their past 10 games and remain the
only team in the NFL without a win. Drew Stanton made his debut in the NFL and
went 6-for-8 with 94 yards and a touchdown.

===

Thomas Jones ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns, as the New York Jets
scored early and often on the way to a 47-3 rout of the St. Louis Rams at the
Meadowlands. The Jets made it a laugher by scoring on each of their seven
offensive possessions and adding another score on defense in the first half.
The Rams helped with four turnovers, as New York opened a 40-0 cushion after
30 minutes and cruised in the second half on the way to the largest margin of
victory in franchise history. The previous record was 42 in a 45-3 triumph
over the Houston Oilers on September 18, 1988. Brett Favre completed 14-of-19
passes for 167 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions for the Jets (6-3),
who won their third straight game and remained tied with New England for first
place in the AFC East. The Jets and Patriots will meet for the outright
division lead on Thursday night in Foxboro.

===

Adrian Peterson rushed for 192 yards, including a 29-yard go-ahead touchdown
with 2:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, as the Minnesota Vikings edged the
Green Bay Packers, 28-27, at the Metrodome. Peterson had 30 carries and also
caught three passes for 33 yards, while Gus Frerotte completed 15-of-28 passes
for 151 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Vikings
(5-4), who have won two straight games and four of their last five. Minnesota
and Chicago are now tied for first place atop the NFC North Division, as the
Bears lost to Tennessee on Sunday. Chester Taylor had four catches for 84
yards and a score, and Sidney Rice caught a three-yard TD pass in the win.
Aaron Rodgers finished 15-of-26 passing for 142 yards, while Ryan Grant rushed
for 75 yards and a score for Green Bay (4-5), which has lost two in a row.

The San Francisco 49ers' Mike Singletary will have a chance to record his
first win as a head coach before a national television audience on Monday
night, but will have the daunting task of trying to earn it on the road
against the first-place Arizona Cardinals. San Francisco hasn't won since
September 21, when they moved to 2-1 with a win over the Lions, and the recent
skid sparked Singletary to make a change at the quarterback position. Benched
for Week 10 is eight-game starter J.T. O'Sullivan, with part-time 2007 starter
Shaun Hill charged with turning around the team's season. The Cardinals enter
Monday's contest with a six-game home winning streak dating back to last
season, the longest such run since the 1975-76 Cardinals won six in a row in
St. Louis.

=== COLLEGE FOOTBALL ===

Alabama and Texas Tech remained Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the latest Bowl
Championship Series poll, while Penn State fell to eighth after its crushing
upset loss at Iowa. The Crimson Tide (.9814) edged BCS No. 20 LSU, 27-21, in
overtime to stay undefeated and clinch the SEC West, while the Red Raiders
(.9715) ripped BCS No. 13 Oklahoma State 56-20. Both clubs are 10-0 and appear
to control their own destinies for a potential BCS title game matchup.
Challenges await down the stretch for both clubs, however, starting with Texas
Tech's visit to BCS No. 5 Oklahoma (.8444) in two weeks. The Sooners moved up
a spot after a 66-28 thrashing of Texas A&M. Alabama, meanwhile, hosts
Mississippi State next week before the annual Iron Bowl against Auburn on
November 29. Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions, meanwhile, probably saw their
national title hopes evaporate after a stunning 24-23 loss to Iowa dropped
them to 9-1 on the season, falling from third to eighth (.6839). Because of
Penn State's inferior schedule, even if both Alabama and Texas Tech lost, the
Nittany Lions would have trouble leapfrogging a one-loss Big 12 or SEC team.

San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker is expected to be out approximately four
weeks with a sprained left ankle. An MRI revealed a grade two ankle sprain,
according to a San Antonio newspaper. Parker suffered the injury in the first
quarter of Friday's 99-83 loss to the Miami Heat. He drove to the hoop for
a bucket and rolled his ankle upon landing with 2:06 left in the
quarter. He immediately grabbed for the ankle and was off to the locker room,
where x-rays were negative. Parker had a career night in leading the Spurs
to their first win of the season on Wednesday in a thrilling double-
overtime victory, 129-125, against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The seventh-
year pro dropped a career-high 55 points, including nine in the second
overtime, on 22-of-36 shots from the floor and dished out 10 assists while
bringing down seven rebounds. The native of France is averaging 27.4 points,
thanks in part to Wednesday's performance, and 5.8 assists this season. George
Hill and Jacque Vaughn are expected to take over the point guard duties in
Parker's absence.

With a desire to pitch for a 15th season, Andy Pettitte filed for free agency
and was the lone player to do so on Sunday. The veteran left-hander compiled
14 wins and lost a career-high 14 games with a 4.54 earned run average in 33
starts last year for the Yankees, who, at 89-73, finished third in the AL East
and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1993. Pettitte, 36, has a
career record of 215-127 with a 3.89 ERA over 11 seasons with the Yankees and
three with the Houston Astros.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America will hand out their first two
postseason honors on Monday, as the American and National League Rookies of
the Year will be announced. Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria figures to
be the runaway winner in the American League, while Chicago Cubs catcher
Geovany Soto should also easily walk away with the award in the Senior
Circuit. Longoria helped guide the Rays to not only their first-ever winning
season, but their first AL East title en route to a trip to the World Series,
where they lost in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies. The 23-year-old
third baseman, despite starting the season in the minors, was selected to the
All-Star Game and finished the year with impressive numbers for any major
leaguer, let alone a rookie. In just 122 games, Longoria belted 27 homers,
drove in 85 runs and scored 67. Soto, meanwhile, will be trying to become the
fifth Cub to win the award and the first since Kerry Wood in 1998. The 25-
year-old backstop, who became the first rookie catcher to start an All-Star
Game, batted 285 with 23 homers, 35 doubles and led all rookies with 86 RBI -
one more than Longoria.

Forwards Glenn Anderson and Igor Larionov will be inducted into the Hockey
Hall of Fame Monday night. Anderson and Larionov are joined in this year's
class by Ed Chynoweth and Ray Scapinello. Chynoweth, who passed away last
April, was selected from the Builder category and Scapinello earned his
induction as part of the Referee/Linesman category. A member of the Edmonton
dynasty in the mid-to-late 1980s, Anderson spent 16 years in the NHL
(1980-96) and compiled 498 goals and 1,099 points over 1,129 games with the
Oilers, Maple Leafs, Rangers and Blues. Larionov enjoyed two distinct careers
during a 26-year hockey sojourn. The Russian center spent 11 seasons in his
homeland, including eight with the famed Red Army squad. Teamed with wingers
Sergei Makarov and Vladimir Krutov, the "KLM Line" helped the Soviet Union
take home Olympic gold in 1984 and 1988 along with a Canada Cup title in 1981.
Larionov made his NHL debut in 1989, and skated for 14 seasons in the league
for the Canucks, Sharks, Red Wings, Panthers and Devils. He won three
Stanley Cups as a member of the Wings (1997-98, 2002), racking up 169 goals
and 644 points in 921 contests overall.

=== AUTO RACING ===

Jimmie Johnson took a huge step toward his record-tying third consecutive
Sprint Cup Series championship with a dominating victory in Sunday's Checker
O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Johnson led 217 of
313 laps and held off Kurt Busch in a green-white-checkered finish. The
victory was Johnson's seventh of the season and the 40th of his Sprint Cup
career. He also became the first driver to win three races in a row at
Phoenix. Johnson now holds a 141-point lead over Carl Edwards, who finished
fourth. If Johnson finishes 36th or better, regardless of Edwards'
performance, in next weekend's season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, he
will clinch the title.

Davis Love III fired an eight-under 64 on Sunday to come from behind and win
the title at the Children's Miracle Network Classic. Love finished the
championship at 25-under 263 and collected his 20th career victory on the PGA
Tour. That magic win total earned him a lifetime exemption on tour. The win,
Love's first since Greensboro two years ago, came remarkably close to the 20-
year anniversary of his father's tragic death in a plane accident. Love won by
a single stroke over the unlikeliest of runner-ups, Tommy Gainey. Gainey, best
known for wearing two black gloves while playing, was a contestant on The Golf
Channel's "Big Break" program. On Sunday, he fired a 64 as well and took
second at minus-24. Overnight co-leaders Scott Verplank and Steve Marino both
managed one-under 71s on Sunday and tied for third at 20-under 268.

=== TENNIS ===

Venus Williams roared back from a set down to beat Russia's Vera Zvonareva for
the title at the Sony Ericsson Championships. Williams rallied for a 6-7
(5-7), 6-0, 6-2 triumph to capture the season-ending event for the first time
in her career. In her only two prior appearances, she lost in the semifinals.
Five other times Williams had qualified for the event and withdrew. The $1.34
million first prize moved Williams into second place on the all-time earnings
list. She was fifth entering the tournament and surpassed Martina Navratilova,
sister Serena and Steffi Graf. Only Lindsay Davenport has won more prize money
on the WTA Tour. Venus earned her 39th career title and third of 2008. She
also won at Wimbledon and Zurich, and will finish the season sixth in the
final rankings.

=== COLLEGE BASKETBALL ===

The 2008-09 college basketball season gets started Monday with a pair of
games, including one involving a ranked team. No.8 Duke hosts Presbyterian in
the 2K Sports College Classic at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke is 26-2 under
Mike Krzyzewski in season openers. The Blue Devils have won 59 consecutive
non-conference home games and returns four starters from last year's team that
went 28-6 and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The earlier game
from the same tournament will have Houston playing Georgia Southern, again
from Durham.
