NATHAN WILLIAMS IS OVC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After posting his second game of the season with at least 20 tackles, Murray State senior linebacker Nathan Williams was named the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. Williams is a finalist for FCS National Defensive Player of the Year and leads the nation in total tackles, solo tackles and tackles per game. Williams is tied for the OVC lead and 22nd nationally with 6.5 sacks and needs 20 tackles to pass Donald White for the single-season tackles record at MSU. He ranks seventh on the career tackle list with 358 and could climb as high as fourth by the end of the season. Despite the honor, Williams was not happy with the Racer performance Saturday in a 34-6 loss at Eastern Illinois, but he added the honor was good for the school. The Racers welcome Southeast Missouri for a 1pm game Saturday, and we'll talk about the game tonight at 6 on Hey Coach with Matt Griffin on Froggy 103.7.

The Detroit Lions and free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper have agreed to
terms on a contract Sunday. Detroit coach Rod Marinelli confirmed the deal
after the Lions dropped a 27-23 game to Chicago on Sunday to move to 0-8 on
the season. Detroit is now the last team in the NFL without a victory as the
previously winless Cincinnati Bengals knocked off the Jacksonville Jaguars
Sunday. Culpepper, 31, most recently played for the Oakland Raiders in 2007,
when he appeared in seven games for the club. Culpepper's best season came in
2004 as a member of the Vikings, when he threw for 4,717 yards, 39 touchdowns
and only 11 interceptions for a 110.9 quarterback rating. The Lions have
struggled at the quarterback position this season, as Dan Orlovsky has taken
over for injured starter Jon Kitna, who was lost for the season. Orlovsky has
five touchdown passes and four interceptions in seven appearances and has lost
his first four career starts.

Ben Roethlisberger looks to put a four-interception performance in last week's
21-14 loss to the New York Giants into the rearview mirror when his Pittsburgh
Steelers travel to Washington to face the Redskins on Monday night. Despite
the setback to the defending champions, Pittsburgh holds a half-game lead in
the AFC North over the Baltimore Ravens. Washington boasts a 6-2 record and
the league's leading rusher heading into Week 9 in Clinton Portis, who
rattled off 126 yards on 24 carries in a closer-than-expected 25-17 victory
over winless Detroit in Week 8. The 'Skins haven't opened a campaign 7-2 since
1996.

=== COLLEGE FOOTBALL ===

Texas Tech's thrilling victory over Big 12 rival Texas on Saturday has thrown
a monkey wrench in the Bowl Championship Series poll, as the Alabama Crimson
Tide moved into the top spot. The Longhorns held the No. 1 position in the BCS
in the first two weeks of the poll's release, but Michael Crabtree's dramatic
touchdown with one second remaining on Saturday gave the Red Raiders a 39-33
victory and paved the way for a new top dog in the college ranks. Alabama
(0.9747), last week's No. 2 seed in the BCS, moved into the front-running
position thanks to the Red Raiders and the Crimson Tide's 35-0 drubbing of
Arkansas State. The Tide will have a much tougher test next week when they
square off against reigning national champion LSU in Death Valley. Texas Tech
(0.9372) moved from seventh all the way up to second after the biggest win in
the program's history. The Red Raiders also have a tough test at home against
Oklahoma State (0.6660), the ninth-seed in the poll, next Saturday. Among the
programs getting jumped by TTU was Penn State (0.9286), which was idle after a
hard-fought win at Ohio State the previous week and remained in the third
position in the poll. Alabama, Texas Tech and Penn State are all a perfect 9-0
on the season. Texas (0.8531), which survived the Big 12 gauntlet of Oklahoma,
Missouri and Oklahoma State before the loss, fell to No. 4. Florida (0.8268)
dominated Georgia, 49-10, in a grudge match this past weekend and moved up
from the eighth position to No. 5.

=== NHL ===

New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has been ruled out for Monday's
tilt with the Buffalo Sabres after suffering a bruised left elbow in
Saturday's game against Atlanta. Brodeur will see his streak of consecutive
regular-season starts end at a career-high 51 games dating back to January 8
of last season. Brodeur has made 56 straight starts including the playoffs.
The four-time Vezina Trophy winner skated off the ice in the second period on
Saturday. He first appeared to hurt his elbow reaching for a shot and soon
after fell to the ice clutching his left arm. He stopped all five shots he
faced before exiting and was credited with the victory, leaving him seven wins
shy of Patrick Roy's all-time mark of 551. Kevin Weekes replaced Brodeur in
the New Jersey net Saturday, and goaltender Jeff Frazee, the team's second
selection in the 2005 NHL Draft, was called up from Trenton of the ECHL under
emergency conditions.

=== TENNIS ===

French crowd favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Argentine star David
Nalbandian in three sets on Sunday to win the Paris Masters title and clinch a
spot in the Tennis Masters Cup. Tsonga won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in a shade more than
two hours for his second career title, both coming this year. The win ensured
that the 23-year-old will be a part of the eight-man field at the Tennis
Masters Cup in Shanghai later this month.

=== AUTO RACING ===

Carl Edwards drove the final 69 laps without pitting for fuel to win Sunday's
Dickies 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway and trim 77 points off of Jimmie
Johnson's lead in the Sprint Cup Series championship standings. The No.99
Roush Fenway Racing driver led 212 of 334 laps and finished 8.310 seconds
ahead of second-place Jeff Gordon. Edwards recorded his eighth victory of the
season and the 15th of his Sprint Cup career. He also swept Texas this year as
he won the Samsung 500 in April. Jamie McMurray, Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle
completed the top-five. After finishing 15th, Johnson's lead is 106 points
with just two races to go.

=== RUNNING ===

Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe captured the women's title at the New York
City Marathon for a second consecutive year, while the men's champion for a
second time in three years was Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil. Radcliffe
led virtually from wire-to-wire and crossed the finish line in a time of two
hours, 23 minutes and 56 seconds. It was her third NYC Marathon win, as she
also captured the crown in 2004. The only woman with more New York City titles
is Norway's Grete Waitz, who won nine times in an 11-year span from 1978-88.
Gomes dos Santos completed the course in two hours, eight minutes and 43
seconds to edge Morocco's Abderrahim Goumri by just 24 seconds. Gomes dos
Santos also won the title in 2006 and last year finished eighth.
