Monday News Update

CALLOWAY 2ND IN CLASS 4A, MURRAY HIGH 3RD IN CLASS A AT KMEA FINALS
Both local high school marching bands had incredible weekends at the KMEA State Marching Band Championships at Papa John's Stadium in Louisville. Calloway County took second place in the state in 4A with a score of 84, just behind state champion Madisonville-North Hopkins 89.79. The Lakers advanced to the championship by finishing fourth in the 4A semifinals at South Oldham High School. In Class A, Murray High took third in the state with a final score of 81.75. Williamstown claimed the Class A Championship with an 87.87. Mayfield finished fourth in Class A. The Tiger Band advanced to the championship by finishing third in the semifinals at Butler High School earlier in the day. Congratulations to both schools on a great 2008 Marching Band Year.

GIRL MISSING
Area law enforcement are looking for a missing 14-year old girl. Katie Martin has been missing since yesterday morning. She has blonde hair is 5'3" tall and weighs 125 pounds. If you see her, contact the Murray Police Department.,

ELECTION DAY TOMORROW
Voters head to the polls tomorrow from 6am-6pm. In Calloway County there are two new precincts bringing the county total to 30. Murray 13 will vote at Westside Baptist Church and Murray 14 at Martin's Chapel United Methodist. Both are city precincts made which were needed due to annexation. DIABETES CLASSES THIS WEEK
The Center for Diabetes will hold Diabetes Self-Management Classes in the Center for Health & Wellness Classroom tomorrow and Wednesday from 8:00 to 4:30.  These classes help create awareness on the latest diabetic treatments and self-management techniques available. MSU ANNOUNCES ENROLLMENT
Increased enrollment among new freshman, international students, graduate students and extended campuses attributed to an overall enrollment for Murray State University of 10,025 students this year. Additionally, MSU gained 51 new enrollments for graduate programs, a 2.8 percent increase. Overall, regional campus enrollment experienced the largest percentage of growth with an increase of 8.5 percent for a total of 4,591. The MSU goal of 12,000 students by 2012 is a direct response to the Kentucky Council for Postsecondary Education’s plan to double the numbers of residents with baccalaureate degrees by 2020.

MOOSE LODGE RAIDED IN MAYFIELD
Kentucky State Police executed a search warrant Saturday on the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge in Mayfield. The search warrant was based on an investigation for illegal alcohol sales on the premises. The search resulted in confiscation of multiple alcoholic beverages and gambling equipment.  The investigation is continuing and charges are pending at this time. 

GRAVES MAN BELIEVED TO BE MURDER VICTIM
The Graves County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of 60-year-old Gary Seaford as murder. Seaford was a man with special needs, found unconscious on the lawn of a home not far away from the group home where he lived.

MISSOURI MAN ARRESTED
A Missouri man was arrested Friday night at Heartland Worship Center in Paducah after taking pictures of children there during a church festival. 41-year-old Anthony Allen Burns of St. Louis was charged with possession of Loritab not in a proper container, driving without a license and without insurance. Deputies also took his two cameras. Deputies found Burns taking pictures of children in the parking lot. Burns had been previously arrested sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. He was released from the McCracken County Jail when his mother paid his bond.

GREEN ARRESTED AFTER 3 COUNTY CHASE
Mayfield police arrested forty-four year old Tony Green Friday morning after leading them on a three county chase. Police say the chase began after an officer tried to stop Green for going the wrong way in a drive through. Green ran several lights and tried to hit a police cruiser before crashing in Hickman County and running away. A female passenger in Green's van jumped out near Fancy Farm and was hit by the vehicle.

PLUMMER PLEAS
Friday, William Plummer pleaded guilty to murder and 1st degree criminal abuse in connection with the death of a two-year-old. He will serve a 25 year sentence for murder, and a five year sentence for criminal abuse and won’t be eligible for parole for 21 years. The mother of the child, Jetina Marie Baker, goes to trial November 17 on 1st degree criminal abuse charges. She's accused of playing a roll in her son's death.

SHOOTING IN MAYFIELD KILLS ONE
A man is dead, a man is wounded, and a suspect is under arrest in western Kentucky. Mayfield police have arrested 25-year-old Cortes T. Thornton. Thornton is charged with attempted murder and a separate charge of trafficking a controlled substance. The arrest comes after a shooting outside of a club that left 29-year-old Edward Tyrone Hendricks dead 32-year-old David Benjamin seriously wounded. Benjamin was rushed to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville his condition is not known.

ACROSS KENTUCKY
State officials and county clerks all across the state are making final preparations for Election Day. Secretary of State Trey Grayson says his biggest concern may be long lines. He urges voters to vote at off "peak times" if possible. Secretary Grayson says traditionally most people vote before work at the lunch break or after work.

Senator Mitch McConnell and challenger Bruce Lunsford will campaigning today as their fierce battle continues. McConnell is doing a fly-around of the state. Lunsford will also be making a number of stops. The latest polling shows McConnell still in the lead. A Survey USA/WHAS TV poll released Sunday shows Mitch McConnell leading Bruce Lunsford 53 to 45-percent.

State Police report the arrest of a 17-year-old boy in connection with the fatal shooting of a 56-year-old man. A shooting at the Barren County home of 56-year-old John Upton took his life. Later Investigators arrested the unidentified teenager.

A Laurel County man says he has found his four horses , including a four-month-old colt shot to death. Harvey Johnson told WLEX TV the horses had wandered off his property, and someone killed them Laurel County Sheriff's deputies are investigating.

A fire gutted the "Backstage", a nightclub in Somerset. The fire reportedly began after the club was closed for the night and there were no injuries. The owner says he hopes to rebuild. Fire investigators look for the cause of the fire.

Centre College has reached a milestone, it has it's largest enrollment ever. The "Advocate Messenger" reports there are now over eleven-hundred students enrolled at the Danville school, a record. The school is also pleased with another statistic, Centre officials say the 2008 graduation rate of 84-percent is also a new record.
