James Shields threw nearly six shutout innings and B.J. Upton went 2-for-4 with a run batted in as the Tampa Bay Rays topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2, in Game 2 of the World Series. With the win, the Rays evened the best-of- seven matchup. Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Citizens Bank Park, and you can hear it beginning at 7pm on 1340 WNBS.

SKYHAWKS NIP GAMECOCKS
UT Martin held off a dramatic attempt at a comeback last night by Jacksonville State and held on for a 31-30 win. Trailing 31-24 with less than five minutes to play, junior Ryan Perrilloux connected with junior James Wilkerson on a 66-yard touchdown pass that cut the deficit to one, but senior placekicker Gavin Hallford’s point after attempt sailed wide right. The Skyhawks held on from there to improve to 7-2, 5-1 in the OVC. The Skyhawks gained 493 yards behind Miguel Barnes’ 117 rushing yards and Cade Thompson’s 275 yards through the air...In other college football last night, West Virginia defeated Auburn 34-17 and Air Force beat New Mexico 23-10.
RACER SOCCER COULD CLINCH OVC TODAY
The Murray State Women’s Soccer team plays its final Ohio Valley Conference games today and Sunday at Cutchin Field when they host Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech. The first place Racers are looking to win the program’s first title but must play well in order to assure it. After today's match against APSU at 3 p.m., the Racers entertain Tennessee Tech Sunday at 1 p.m. With the OVC Tournament looming, there is plenty of room for movement in the final weekend of the season as the teams jockey to win the title and set seeding for the post-season tournament. The Racers and UT Martin host APSU and TTU, while Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky host Jacksonville State. Using the conference formula of awarding three points for a win and one point for a tie, it’s easy to see the league is a long way from deciding the participants in the six-team tournament and what their seeding will be. The winner of the regular season title will host the semi-finals and finals Nov. 7 & 9. The first and second seeds receive byes to the semi-finals while seeds three through six play Tuesday Nov. 4 at campus sites to see who advances to the semi-finals.

Airtime tonight on 1340 WNBS is 7pm with Jeremy Bell and Travis Turner...Meanwhile, Calloway County is on the road in a difficult district matchup when they visit Hopkins County Central, a team looking to make it four wins in a row. A Laker win would be their third staight, and force a three-way tie for first with the Lakers, Lone Oak, and Hopkins Central, a tiebreaker that would likely give the Lakers a home game to begin the playoffs.. In other action tonight, Mayfield is at Fulton City, Crittenden County visits Fulton County, Caldwell County is at Trigg County, Paducah Tilghman travels to Muhlenberg South, Lone Oak visits Muhlenberg North, Apollo is at Graves County, Henderson County is at Marshall County, and Heath travels to Ballard Memorial.

The Murray State Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) has big plans for the next "Make a Difference Day" at Roy Stewart Stadium Saturday. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. While hundreds of people drop off unwanted items for proper disposal, the MSU SAAC will collect canned food for the Murray/Calloway County Need Line. As people come through the line Oct. 25 in the big parking lot of Stewart Stadium, they are asked to also bring canned food items, which will be collected by the MSU SAAC.
Murray State Athletics will also be giving away 500 children’s tickets to the Racer Football game against Southeast Missouri Nov. 8, and another 500 for the Racer Basketball games Jan. 10 against Austin Peay. Need Line supports more than 700 families in Murray and Calloway County each month. However, the pantry is running low and any food items would be greatly appreciated.

PREDS GO DOWN TO FLAMES
Jarome Iginla registered a hat trick as the Calgary Flames downed the Nashville Predators, 5-3, at the Sommet Center. David Moss and Michael Cammalleri each scored a goal for the Flames, who have won their past two games. Miikka Kiprusoff made 35 saves. Jason Arnott had a goal and an assist while Dan Ellis gave up four goals on 26 shots for the Predators, who have lost three of their last four games. Trailing by two goals, the Flames scored twice within a 1:13 span in the third period to tie the game. Iginla got the first goal at the 6:52 mark of the period and Moss jammed the puck into the net during a scrum in front to tie the contest. Arnott was called for holding to give Calgary a power play and the Flames used the advantage to take the lead. Dion Phaneuf blasted a slap shot from the left point that Cammalleri tipped from in front with 7:29 left in the game. The Predators controlled play for much of the remainder of the contest, but were unable to net the equalizer, and Iginla's empty-net goal in the final seconds accounted for the final score.
UK-FLORIDA PREVIEW
The Florida Gators have not lost to the Kentucky Wildcats since 1986, and the two SEC clubs will square off this weekend in Gainesville. Kentucky is 5-2 overall and needs just one more victory to earn bowl eligibility. The Wildcats lost two in a row after opening the season with four straight victories, but they were able to get back on track with a come-from- behind, 21-20 victory over Arkansas last Saturday. The remaining schedule will be challenging for coach Rich Brooks and company, as three of the final five regular season tilts, including this weekend's clash, will take place on the road. As for Florida, it has been idle since a 51-21 thrashing of LSU on October 11th. The Gators are 5-1 overall and have won back-to-back decisions since suffering their lone loss to Ole Miss by one point. Next week, the team will take on rival Georgia in Jacksonville, so it will be important not to look past this dangerous group of 'Cats. History says that won't happen, as Florida owns a commanding 41-17 series lead over Kentucky, including 21 consecutive victories over the Wildcats. The Kentucky offense has some injury issues to deal with. Dicky Lyons, arguably the club's best receiver, was lost for the season with a knee injury two weeks ago. Now, tailback Derrick Locke is listed as questionable after injuring his knee against Arkansas last weekend. Speaking of that game against the Razorbacks, the Wildcats trailed 20-7 in the fourth quarter and looked lifeless. That's when freshman Randall Cobb took over, scoring a pair of touchdowns in a span of less than two minutes on passes from Mike Hartline. "I don't think there has been a young quarterback that has been able to come back and do this at Kentucky in a long time," said Kentucky coach Rich Brooks when asked to comment on the play of Hartline. "In a game where the only way we can win it is to throw it and he made the plays necessary to win the game. I hope this does a lot for his confidence and other's confidence in him."
The Wildcats are averaging 25.4 ppg and 324.9 total ypg this season. Hartline has been a bit inconsistent, as he has completed 55 percent of his passes for 1,265 yards and eight touchdowns with six interceptions. Still, for a first- year starter in the SEC, the sophomore deserves credit. Locke is a dual threat out of the backfield and will be missed if he is inactive or significantly slowed. Give the Kentucky defense a great deal of credit for its play against Arkansas last weekend. The Razorbacks scored their only two touchdowns in the first half, and those scores were the culmination of drives that spanned 24 and 18 yards, respectively. Also, one of Arkansas' two field goals finished off a four-play, five-yard drive. Kentucky came up with four takeaways and limited the Hogs to 94 passing yards. While Arkansas did put up big rushing totals, the overall effort of the defense was strong. "Our red zone defense has been pretty good all year long," said Brooks. "We haven't allowed too many teams to score down there, but Arkansas was down there many times. I'm very proud of the way the defense sucked it up and made the plays down there." Quietly, Kentucky has been one of the elite defensive teams in the SEC this season, limiting opponents to 11.9 ppg and 282.1 total ypg. The Wildcats have yielded only seven touchdowns to opposing offenses in seven outings.
LOUISVILLE-SOUTH FLORIDA PREVIEW
The 14th-ranked South Florida Bulls kick off a crucial two-game road trip this weekend, as they square off against the Louisville Cardinals in Big East play at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The Bulls enter the game on a winning note, as they pounded Syracuse 45-13 this past weekend. It was a nice rebound by USF, which was knocked out of the Top 10 following a 26-21 loss to Pittsburgh in its prior outing. Now at 6-1 overall, the Bulls are set to play two important road games in a row against Louisville and Cincinnati. Winning away from home hasn't been a problem for USF this season, as it is a perfect 3-0 on the road.
As for Louisville, it improved to 3-2 at home following a 42-23 triumph over Middle Tennessee last weekend. The win was the team's second straight, lifting it to 4-2 overall on the year. The Cardinals now turn their focus back to the Big East, where they lost to UConn in their only outing thus far. Louisville has done a good job in moving the ball this season and it comes into the game gaining 210.7 ypg on the ground and 194.5 ypg through the air. Last weekend, the Cardinals totaled 391 yards, including 247 on the ground, in a victory over Middle Tennessee. The Cardinals' defense has been the biggest surprise this season, as the unit has done an excellent job in holding foes to only 299.2 total ypg. The defense has been especially tough against the run, giving up only 86.3 ypg and three touchdowns on the ground.

The Tampa Bay Rays drew even in the World Series against the Philadelphia
Phillies with a 4-2 win in Game 2 at Tropicana Field. James Shields (1-0)
threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball for the Rays, who lost Game 1, 3-2, on
Wednesday. Now the best-of-seven matchup stands at 1-1 as the series shifts to
Philadelphia, with Game 3 set for Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. B.J. Upton
went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for Tampa Bay, which managed seven hits, all
of them singles. Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria added RBI groundouts. Dan
Wheeler tossed a scoreless inning of relief, while rookie David Price threw
the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and avoiding a late Phillies
rally. Philadelphia won Game 1 despite leaving 11 men on base and going 0-
for-13 with runners in scoring position. The same offensive troubles showed up
again, as the Phillies left 11 more runners on base and went 1-for-15 with
them in scoring position. Eric Bruntlett slammed a pinch-hit solo homer in the
eighth inning for Philadelphia, while Carlos Ruiz finished with a pair of
doubles and two walks. The first three hitters in the Phillies lineup -- Jimmy
Rollins, Jayson Werth and Chase Utley -- finished a combined 1-for-14. Brett
Myers (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs -- three earned -- on seven
hits with three walks in seven innings. Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer and Tampa
Bay's Matt Garza, the AL Championship Series MVP, are scheduled to start Game
3.

Arizona men's basketball coach Lute Olson announced his retirement on
Thursday, ending the 74-year-old's 25-year reign at the helm of the Wildcats.
UA athletic director Jim Livengood stated the school will soon begin a
national search for a permanent replacement. Olson has compiled a 780-280
career record at Arizona, Iowa, and Long Beach State. His 589-187 record
with the Wildcats includes the 1997 national championship, four Final
Four appearances, 11 Pac-10 titles, and 20 consecutive 20-win seasons.
Olson has also won seven Pac-10 Coach of the Year awards. His 27 NCAA
Tournament appearances as a coach are one behind Bob Knight for the all-time
record, and Olson entered the season second behind Duke's Mike Krzyzewski
for most wins among active NCAA Division I men's coaches. Inducted
into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, Olson also guided Iowa to the 1980
Final Four. The Wildcats are coming off a disappointing campaign in
Olson's absence in which they went 19-15, 8-10 in the Pac-10, with former
Olson assistant Kevin O'Neill at the helm. Olson had intended on returning
this season, having taken a leave of absence last November because of personal
issues. O'Neill was designated Olson's successor last season, but that
offer was rescinded after Olson announced he was returning. O'Neill left
the program and took a job as an assistant coach with the NBA's Memphis
Grizzlies.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has reportedly undergone three
procedures to clear out an infection in his left knee that could delay the
rehabilitation process. A Boston newspaper reported Thursday that doctors have
performed two procedures in addition to the one that Brady confirmed on
his official web site last week, in hopes to quell the infection.
Brady suffered what has widely been reported to be tears of his ACL and MCL
during New England's season-opening victory, and, according to the Herald,
underwent surgery to repair the ligaments on October 6 by Dr. Neal ElAttrache
at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles. Brady has stayed on the
West Coast, and has received his follow-up treatment at the same clinic.
The report cites a source close to Brady as saying that there is a fear
that the infection could compromise the patellar tendon graft used to replace
his ACL, forcing an entirely new reconstructive surgery, and further delaying
Brady's return.

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson was fined $10,000 by the league
for a touchdown celebration in the team's 34-10 win over the Chiefs in Kansas
City this past Sunday. Johnson, the 24th overall pick in this year's NFL
draft, had a 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter of the win, and
afterward started beating on drums in the Chiefs' pep band. Johnson has rushed
for 549 yards on 103 carries, with three TDs, through six games for the
Titans.

The news for five-time major champion Seve Ballesteros is not getting better.
Officials at La Paz hospital in Madrid released a statement saying
Ballesteros' condition is serious and he needs more surgery after the tumor in
his brain was determined to be cancerous. Ballesteros, a three-time winner of
the British Open and two-time Masters champion, collapsed at a Madrid airport
nearly two weeks ago and further tests diagnosed the tumor. Friday's surgery
will be the third for Ballesteros.
