Council okays additional 15 minutes for New Year's Eve

MURRAY POLICE ARREST TWO
Last night, Murray Police Officer Todd Clere initiated a traffic stop at C.C. Lowry Drive, when two subjects attempted to exit the vehicle and flee. Clere and Officer Jay Herndon were able to apprehend both individuals at the scene. 45-year old Carmen Summerville of Murray was arrested on several outstanding Calloway County warrants. She was charged with felony theft, forgery, and contempt of court based on the warrants, and the traffic stop led to additional charges, including possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. 45-year old Gary Sims of Murray was also arrested and charged with trafficing in a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both Sims and Summerville were arrested and lodged in the Calloway County Jail.

COUNCIL EXTENDS NEW YEAR'S  EVE ALCOHOL SALES BY 15 MINUTES
At last night's Murray City Council meeting, the Council voted to extend the time alcohol can by served on New Year's Eve by 15 minutes. The move will allow restaurants to offer a midnight toast. The City also recognized MSU Women's Golf Coach Velvet Milkman for her work in Make a Difference Day activities. The Council approved ordinances on the historic overlay district and funding for repairs to city hall. Sam Underwood was reappointed to the code enforcement board and Chuck Foster to the Murray Calloway County Park Board. The Council also went into executive session, but made no announcment when they emerged.

HOPKINSVILLE MEN ARRESTED
Two Hopkinsville men were arrested by Murray Police after they allegedly sold marijuana to an undercover officer. 20-year-old Corey Lovell and 22-year-old Dontraz Stiger are being held on misdemeanor trafficking charges The arrests occured Wednesday night, and involved Murray Police, the Calloway County Sheriff’s Department, the Mayfield Police Department and the Pennnyrile Narcotics Task Force.

TWO ARRESTED IN COTTAGE GROVE INVASION
A home invasion in Cottage Grove has lead to the arrest of two Murray men as police search for a third. 27-year old Nicholas Ray Wheeler and 22-year old Justin Collins, both of Murray, were arrested following an invasion of a home on Terrapin Creek Road and charged with aggravated burglary and robbery. Another suspect, 32-year old Kory Roach of Murray is being sought by police. A warrant has been issued for Roach's capture on the same charges. The victim was held at gunpoint by a white male in a ski mask. No one was hurt in the incident. A shotgun, knife, and a small amount of money were taken from the home during the robbery.

DEATH PENALTY SOUGHT FOR DUNLAP
The Trigg County Commonwealth Attorney says he’s seeking the death penalty against Kevin Wayne Dunlap, charged with slaying three Roaring Spring children and seriously injuring their mother last month. Dunlap was indicted by a Trigg County Grand Jury earlier this week

REGENTS MEET AT 1
The Murray State University Board of Regents will meet in a quarterly session today at 1 in the Jesse Stuart room of Pogue library. Included in the meeting will be a report by President Randy Dunn, and the creation of the Athletic Training program. There will also be a spotlight on the MSU campus emergency response team. There will be a reading of audits as well as reviews from the ad hoc committee and the committee of the whole.

CROOKS DROPS MURDER CHARGE ON GREEN
Graves District Judge Deborah Crooks dropped an attempted murder charge against Tony Green of Mayfield who led police on a chase into Hickman County. Green still faces charges of second-degree assault, two counts of wanton endangerment of a police officer, assault, fleeing and evading police, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and violating his parole. A grand jury will hear the case on Dec. 18. The Murder charges stemmed from a passenger in Green’s van jumping from the van and getting run over. 

ONLINE ONLY ELK APPLICATIONS IN KY
A shift to online-only applications for Kentucky elk quota hunts will solve problems with notifying people drawn for a hunt. The new system takes effect Dec. 1, when the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources begins its application sales for the 2009-10 elk hunt. Other licenses and permits will not be affected by the change. Under the new system, hunters will provide their names and addresses when they register online at the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife website. The new system speeds up the notification process and increases its efficiency. Hunters drawn for the 2009-10 elk hunt will also be able to pay for their elk permit online rather than sending a check to the department.

RODEO BEGINS TONIGHT
Cowboys and cowgirls will be roping and riding in a host of activities scheduled this weekend at the Bill Cherry Expo Center. The MSU Rodeo Club is sponsoring all events. Proceeds will be used to support the efforts of the MSU Rodeo Team. Friday will feature competition in open barrels and poles. Books open at 5 p.m. with training barrels starting at 6 p.m. . A Jackpot Team Roping will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m. roper classification. The finals of the Jackpot Series featuring calf roping, breakaway calf roping, youth breakaway calf roping and goat tying will be held Sunday beginning at 3 p.m

THORNTON CASE TO GRAND JURY
A Graves County grand jury will consider the cases of Cortes Thornton, in the shootings at a Mayfield night club. During the preliminary hearing Wednesday, Mayfield Police Detective Mark Green testified that he received a call about a shooting in which two people were shot. Edward Tyrone Hendricks, 29, of Mayfield, died at Jackson Purchase Medical Center. David Benjamin, 32, of Mayfield was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. Green said police continue to gather names of those people who saw the disturbance outside The Club.

MAYFIELD RESIDENTS WARNED
Mayfield police are warning residents to lock their doors after a rash of home invasions they believe a man on a bicycle is committing. The man is black, between 5-feet-9 and 6 feet tall, 150 to 170 pounds, and generally wears a gray or black hooded sweat shirt with a jacket over it and jeans. In every instance he has been riding a bicycle. The invasions have happened in the middle of the day, in the evening and at night,

FOWLER INDICTED
A federal grand jury in Paducah indicted 20-year old Derrick Fowler of Cadiz on Thursday on charges of robbery affecting interstate commerce and using a fully automatic machine gun to commit a crime of violence. Fowler is accused of helping others to rob an employee at Handy Corner Market in Cadiz of money belonging to the business. The activities of the market affect interstate commerce because out-of-state residents purchase goods from the store and the store purchases goods from other states that travel in interstate commerce to Kentucky, according to a statement by U.S. Attorney David L. Huber and Paul Vido, special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Louisville.

ACROSS KENTUCKY
A police officer rushed to save lives overnight in Covington. An unidentified officer was the first on the scene of an apartment fire. Even as firefighters rushed to the scene, the police officer ran into the burning building and managed to lead three children and several adults to safety. "Kypost.com" reports one person apparently living in another apartment suffered smoke inhalation was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Lexington Police are searching for two suspects after a restaurant robbery. "WLEX TV" reports the pair, one armed with a handgun confronted the manager of the Logan's Roadhouse on Nicholasville Road about one this morning. The robbers hit the manger with a coffee pot, put a paper bag over his head and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.

Ford is planning to shutdown production at the Louisville Truck Plant for five weeks over the holidays. The "Courier Journal" reports United Auto Workers sources say the plant will be closed from December 15th thru February 2nd. This will effect thousands of workers.

Some workers at the Sun Chemical plant in Greenup County are facing layoffs. A company spokesperson tells The Herald Dispatch" is temporarily laying off 15 of it's 40, they hope to recall them after the first of the year. The company says two of the layoffs will be permanent.
 

The six counties have been selected for post-election audits. As mandated by law the audits are held after every election. The Attorney General's office reports the audits will be conducted in Pendleton, Edmonson, Monroe, Cumberland, Montgomery and Union counties. They were selected in a random drawing.


It is Family Caregiver Month in Kentucky. The governor has made that proclamation to recognize the thousands of people who so give of themselves to family and others. The state estimates 520-thousand Kentuckians provide more than 570-million hours of unpaid care per year for people disabled or elderly or facing other issues.
