MAN ARRESTED, ATV RECOVERED
Just before nine Saturday night, Murray Police officer Jay Herndon observed an ATV westbound on Poplar Street that had been reported stolen earlier in the day by the Calloway County Sheriff's Department. Herndon pursued the vehicle and it fled north on Seventh Street. The driver wrecked the vehicle on Main Street and then fled on foot. He was located and arrested at Sixth and Olive, and identified as 23-year old Dustin Cobb of Murray. He was lodged in the Calloway County jail where he faces multiple charges including receiving stolen property. After recovering the vehicle, it was released to its owner, Frankie Brandon of Murray.
GARLAND CHARGES AMMENDED
Drug charges against Calloway County Coroner Mike Garland will be considered by a Calloway County Grand Jury for possible indictment next month, but without allegations of felony firearm enhancement. During a preliminary hearing Friday in Calloway District Court, Special Judge Hunter Whitesell forwarded marijuana charges against Mike Garland and his wife, Michelle without enhancements for possessing firearms. Mike Garland is charged with cultivating eight marijuana plants and possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Michelle Garland is charged with possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Without enhancements for firearms possession, both of Michelle Garland’s charges are misdemeanors. Mike Garland’s marijuana cultivation charge is a felony.
MARCUM PLEAS
A Calloway County man arrested on marijuana possession and other charges pleaded guilty to lesser charges Friday. As part of a plea agreement, 30-year old Jonathan Marcum will serve three days of his 30-day jail sentence behind bars. Special Judge Hunter Whitesell conditionally discharged the other 27 days as long as Marcum pays $193 in court costs and commits no other crimes. County Attorney David Harrington dismissed charges against Marcum for the vehicle not being registered, not presenting an insurance card and possessing drug paraphernalia. He amended a speeding charge to having improper equipment. Whitesell agreed to allow Marcum to serve his sentence beginning Oct. 17 since Marcum’s wife is expecting a child at any time and he wanted to be present for the birth.
WINGO MAN FACING METH CHARGES
On Friday authorities responded to the residence of William Spillman of Wingo in reference to a stolen vehicle investigation. While interviewing Spillman authorities learned that he was in possession of Methamphetamines and other controlled substances. A search warrant was obtained for Spillman's residence where a handgun and numerous items of drug paraphernalia were located. Spillman was arrested and charged with Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree Firearm Enhanced, Possession of Controlled Substance 2nd Degree, Possession of Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 2nd Offense. Joel Herndon who was also in the residence was arrested and charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 1st Offense.
SWOOPES COMING TO MURRAY
Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist and WNBA all-star Sheryl Swoopes will be on the campus of Murray State University at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, to speak to students about "Dedication and Determination: The Keys to Success." A three-time gold medalist in basketball, Swoopes is a single mother with an inspirational story that shows that anyone who is full of passion and determination and who works hard can really have it all. She is the author of the bestselling book Bounce Back, which chronicles some of the valuable lessons she has learned in her life. Swoopes will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, in Murray State’s Curris Center Ballroom.
ACROSS KENTUCKY
State and federal leaders in Kentucky say the state will be receiving federal money to help residents with winter heating bills. It was announced Friday that Kentucky would receive more than $68 million, which will be distributed through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Governor Steve Beshear says the additional funds would allow the state to help up to 159,000 more families than last year.
Sen. Mitch McConnell says his vote for a $700 billion government rescue of the financial industry is not a political liability in his campaign for a fifth term. The Republican Senate leader said Saturday that the rescue plan was the right thing for the country to free up credit markets. McConnell said it's tough for his opponent to reap any political gain from the vote when the rescue package won broad bipartisan support in Congress.
At least 14 percent of inmates let out of prisons under the state's early release program have since been charged again with crimes, according to a newspaper report. The Courier-Journal in Louisville found that of the 1,004 inmates released as of mid-September, 146 have been arrested or charged again by grand juries. The newspaper examined records from the state Administrative Office of the Courts. At least 16 of the 146 new offenders are accused of committing violent crimes, including rape, robbery and domestic violence.
Governor Steve Beshear has declared a water emergency in Magoffin County. The drought has almost curtailed water flow in the Licking River at Salyersville. Salyersville's Water superintendent says there is plenty of water for everyone, despite a lot of rumors. People are urged to conserve.
Preservation work underway at museum. Work gets underway today at the Kentucky Military History Museum in Frankfort. The museum is in the Old State Arsenal. The arsenal was first constructed in 1850 and served as a warehouse for military equipment and munitions for the Frankfort militia. Work will stabilize the structure and revitalize the building.
State Medical Examiners will conduct an autopsy today on a man who died in a weekend fire in Marion County. 45-year-old Donny Mattingly was discovered in the kitchen of his residence in Loretto. Firefighters say's there nothing suspicious, but the cause remains under investigation. Firefighters discovered Mattingly on the floor, when they gained entry to the kitchen.
A Laurel County Grand jury is to consider whether to indict a grand-mother in the death of her grandson. Two-and-a-half year old grandson Madison Nose was left in the back of an SUV parked near St. Joseph Hospital in London on Friday. The "Herald Leader" reports the boy's grandmother. Linda Long works at the hospital and apparently forgot the boy was in the back of the vehicle. She currently faces reckless homicide charges.
An eight-year-old boy wounded by a blast from his father's shotgun is being treated for his wounds at the University of Kentucky Hospital. Dalton Ward was at a birthday party in Carlisle on Saturday and was wounded as when his father was doing something with his shotgun and it misfired. At last report the youngster is in serious condition. The Nicholas County sheriff says no charges have been filed.
A number of ducks have died at Lake Mingo in Nicholasville. Officials have posted signs around the lake warning it could be contaminated after seven ducks died. The remains of several of the ducks have been taken to experts at the University of Kentucky for analysis.
